Assam aims to plant 100 lakh saplings on Gandhi Jayanti, bolstering the state’s tree economy and tackling climate change head-on
In a remarkable initiative to combat climate change and rejuvenate the environment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the people of the state would unite to plant an astounding 100 lakh saplings on Gandhi Jayanti this year. The ambitious tree plantation drive, named “Mission Life,” aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Jan Andolan” (People’s movement) to lead global climate action efforts.
During his participation in the tree plantation program called “Amri Plantation” held in Chandubi, Kamrup Rural district, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the significance of ‘Mission Life’ in mitigating climate change while simultaneously boosting the state’s tree economy. The Assam government has pledged to provide a generous incentive of Rs 300 per sapling to encourage widespread participation in the initiative.
With the plantation of 100 lakh saplings scheduled for October 2, the state envisions a remarkable 38 percent increase in forest cover by the year 2028. This strategic move will not only contribute to the state’s environmental conservation efforts but also facilitate economic growth by expanding the tree economy. These saplings will play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide, purifying the air, and enhancing biodiversity, thus positively impacting the overall ecosystem.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the urgency of addressing rising temperatures, expressing empathy towards those enduring the scorching heat in the state. By undertaking proactive measures such as the ‘Mission Life’ tree plantation drive, Assam aims to restore temperature levels to an optimal range. The immense scale of the initiative showcases the state’s commitment to climate action and its dedication to creating a sustainable future for its residents.
