Cayman Islands Embarks on Ambitious Airport Development Projects to Foster Tourism Growth

Multi-million dollar investments set to transform aviation infrastructure, bolster economy, and enhance visitor experience

The Cayman Islands, renowned for its pristine beaches and luxury resorts, has given the green light to a series of ambitious airport development projects aimed at addressing safety concerns, regulatory compliance, and catering to the surging number of visitors to the Caribbean paradise.

The centerpiece of the initiative involves extending the runway of Owen Roberts Airport on Grand Cayman, the country’s primary international gateway. The current runway will be lengthened by an impressive 1,900 feet, enabling larger aircraft to land and take off with greater ease. According to internal projections, this expansion is expected to generate a remarkable boost for the island’s tourism industry, with early estimates indicating a potential increase of 15% in visitor arrivals. With tourism contributing up to 25% of the Cayman Islands’ GDP, this development holds the promise of being a true gamechanger.

Not stopping at runway extension, the authorities also aim to upgrade the air traffic control systems at Owen Roberts Airport. Presently relying on manual operations, the airport’s air traffic management surveillance systems will be modernized to keep pace with global standards. This transformation promises to enhance safety, improve efficiency, and streamline operations at one of the Caribbean’s busiest airports.

However, the Cayman Islands’ airport development plans encompass more than just Owen Roberts Airport. A new general aviation airport is set to be constructed, offering enhanced facilities for private and business aircraft. This strategic move not only caters to the growing demand for private aviation in the region but also positions the Cayman Islands as a preferred destination for luxury travel and high-profile events.

Furthermore, the comprehensive airport development program encompasses Charles Kirkconnell Airport, situated on the picturesque sister island of Cayman Brac. Efforts will focus on upgrading the runway end safety systems, which will enhance the airport’s capacity and contribute to overall safety measures.

Kenneth Bryan, the Cayman Islands’ Minister for Tourism and Ports, expressed enthusiasm for the projects and their potential economic impact. “These enhancements are expected to deliver significant economic benefits, including increased visitor spending, higher revenues for the government, improved airlift into Grand Cayman, and enhanced safety and operational efficiency for the Cayman Islands Airports Authority,” he affirmed.

To fund these transformative developments, an estimated $91 million has been allocated. The funding will be sourced through a combination of an airport development fee of $15, which will be imposed on passengers, and a $5 increase in the airport terminal fee during the construction period, spanning from 2024 to 2029.

The Cayman Islands’ forward-looking approach to airport infrastructure signifies the government’s commitment to catering to the evolving needs of travelers while ensuring the sustainability and growth of its tourism sector. With these developments on the horizon, the islands are poised to solidify their position as a leading global destination, offering unparalleled experiences and connectivity in the heart of the Caribbean.
