Manir Mrittik: Redefining Boundaries in Digital Photography with ‘In The Realm of Ambivalence’

Exploring Beauty, Love, and Sexuality through Surrealism and Magical Realism

The Bangladeshi art scene has witnessed the emergence of a young and dynamic talent, Manir Mrittik, whose works have captivated audiences with their dreamy essence, profound messages on love and sexuality, and close connection to nature. Mrittik, a photographer known for his experimentation with digital photography, has now brought his artistic prowess to the forefront with his first solo show, ‘In The Realm of Ambivalence.’

Akar Prakar art gallery, renowned for its promotion of cutting-edge Bangladeshi art, is hosting this six-month-long exhibition in the Capital, showcasing Mrittik’s remarkable body of work. His photographs have the power to transport viewers to Van Gogh’s world of sunflowers or evoke thoughts of Da Vinci’s iconic masterpiece, ‘The Last Supper.’

Mrittik’s artistic vision is driven by a desire to explore the beauty of human life as an integral part of nature, imbued with a dream-like quality. While traditional photography limits itself to capturing visible light, Mrittik aims to go beyond those boundaries, delving into the realms of ultraviolet, infrared, and full spectrum light to capture unique perspectives. His technique of choice, called tapestry, involves using photography and archival papers to create a dialogue with master painters.

“Photography is like drawing for me,” Mrittik explains, emphasizing his ability to continuously rework and expand his artistic vision over time. His prints often combine traditional darkroom techniques, cyanotypes, and hand-painted elements, including the addition of gold leafs. Mrittik feels comfortable working with multiple mediums, which allows him to express his artistic concepts more freely.

Among the captivating pieces featured in the exhibition, a set of 10 hand-tinted photographic prints titled ‘Raptures in Time & Space’ seeks to convey how history profoundly affects us as it unfolds. Additionally, ‘Venus Shattered,’ a photo tapestry comprising three pieces, challenges the notion of simplistic and predefined definitions of sexuality prevalent in the modern era.

Mrittik’s artistic exploration extends beyond aesthetics and encompasses societal issues. He highlights the active involvement of Bangladeshi artists in advocating for LGBT rights and producing dedicated works on this subject. “Love and sexuality are intrinsic parts of our ordinary lives,” Mrittik affirms, emphasizing that his artworks reflect his personal experiences, often featuring his own body and loved ones. He draws inspiration from historic masterpieces that celebrate femininity and explore beauty and sexuality. However, his presence in his work transcends specific gender boundaries, constantly questioning the role of art in perpetuating gender stereotypes.

For admirers of surrealism and magical realism, ‘In The Realm of Ambivalence’ is a must-visit exhibition. Akar Prakar art gallery, located at D 43, Defence Colony, will be showcasing Mrittik’s thought-provoking artworks until October 20. Prepare to be transported to a realm where boundaries blur, and imagination reigns supreme.
